Bill’s 1973 Datsun 240Z

by Alvin G @ 2:40 pm on November 21, 2023

We met Bill in 2019 when he came to Z Car Garage on referral from our local Z Owners of Northern California (ZONC) club. He’s owned this pretty 1973 Datsun 240Z in Brown Metallic (code 114) for many years and had a list of small things that he always wanted to address. Before we cover the cosmetic and mechanical work we performed let’s hear how Bill got into Z cars…

Bill’s Z Story

“When I was about 10, my sister and her husband bought a 1979 280ZX. (They still have it but it currently doesn’t run.) I loved it. I always wanted a Jaguar E type and the Z has a similar shape. As soon as I could afford one, I got a used 1977 280Z and drove it to almost 400,000 miles when I finally wrecked it. I went a couple of months without a Z when a friend told me about a 240 he saw for sale. The owner was a teacher and so am I so of the 3 bidders I got it.”

“Then a few years later I went into administration and with the raise I thought it would be fun to have a new Z to go with the 240 so I ended up buying a 2008 350Z. I have had two Zs ever since. The 350 is definitely more capable and is very fun to drive, but I still think the 240 looks better. A really fun part of owning the 240 is taking it to car shows. I get a lot of people saying things like, “I owned a car just like this.” It seems to bring back a lot of memories for many people. Everybody loves the Z!”

Keeping Bill On The Road

When Bill came to Z Car Garage in 2019 we re-chromed his rear bumper, zinc plated various hardware, removed smog equipment and cleaned up the engine bay. A failing oil spray bar was replaced and we added ZCG exhaust, header and Z Therapy carb set.

Re-chromed rear bumper:

Zinc’d hardware:

New exhaust header and SU carb set from Therapy:

In 2022 we did more work to Bill’s awesome ’73. We replaced the radiator with a Koyo race unit, installed a Rebello street cam, adjustable T/C rods from T3 followed by alignment services in-house. We also replaced the speedometer seal rings and oil pan gasket. More detailed photos in the gallery below!

We took care of a few more items like weatherstripping and added a set of Holley retro headlights:

Enjoy The Ride

We have been taking care of Bill’s 240Z and enjoy working with him:

“ZCG does the highest quality work. They are very knowledgeable, honest and you can tell they really love Zs. It’s like they are working on their own car when they look at a customer’s car! It really feels like a new car. It needed a camshaft and some other parts and they did it perfectly. I love driving that car!”

We also take care of Bill’s 2008 Nissan 350Z convertible, to be featured on zcarblog.com soon!

What’s in store Bill’s 240Z? He’s always wanted a rally clock since seeing one at a car show 10+ years ago.  Also in the near future he wants to do a drum brakes to disc brakes conversion. Keep Enjoying the Ride Bill, thanks for your support and Long Live The Z!

Rick’s 1965 Nissan Silvia

Filed under: Featured Cars and Projects,Maintenance,Performance
by Alvin G @ 3:11 pm on August 11, 2023

Rick’s Nissan Silvia returned to Z Car Garage for a suspension upgrade and sorting. This is not the 90’s Silvia (US-Market Nissan 240sx) we know and love, it is the ultra-rare 1965 Silvia CSP311. Only 554 examples were made from ’65 -’67 and never imported to the US.

The Silvia is special for many reasons. This car was built on the Datsun Sports Roadster chassis, meaning it is a body-on-frame platform sharing the same R16 drivetrain as the Datsun 1600 (SP311). All were hand built and right hand drive with a gorgeous interior. Fairlady owners will notice familiar gauges and switchgear–all borrowed from the contemporary Datsun Roadster.

Image

A rare specimen indeed, fortunately owner Rick K was able to acquire this Silvia from our friends at JDM Legends and have Z Car Garage maintain it. See our report from Rick’s initial visit (inspection, dyno tune etc,) all on zcarblog.com.

Bilstein Suspension

Rick visited us earlier this year for installation of upgraded Bilstein shocks on the Silvia. We have had a great experience running these units on my personal SR20-powered roadster and the ZCG 1967 Datsun 2000 Roadster:

The Bilsteins are available Datsun Restoration Products. Theses are high-quality, fully rebuildable and most importantly custom-valved for the Datsun Roadster for touring to race applications. Rick’s custom-valved set both front and rear for his Silvia:

Installation was a breeze. You’ll notice the supplied lower spring mount. Once installed, these shocks can be removed and replaced through the lower A-arm, no need to disassemble the front suspension to change shocks:

The car was fully aligned following the new shocks:

We also sorted some minor things for Rick. Our electronics master Joshua Corwin fixed the wiring to enable all exterior lighting to function, and we fixed his license plate bracket:

Driving is Believing

The Bilstein shocks transformed the ride quality of the Silvia. Much like our experience with these on our personal Datsun Roadsters, the dampening ability of the Bilsteins is superior to off-the-shelf shock absorbers for this chassis. No more “po-going” or high-frequency jarring on the freeway. I had a blast driving this RHD gem on the Tokyo Calling Tokyo Calling Event with Breakfast Club Rally back in March and the difference was night/day. The Bilsteins are that good.

Image

Rick was kind enough to let me experience the Silvia with the new shocks on one of my favorite roads here the local foothills. It was so much fun. Now Rick needs some nice sticky, vintage rubber to take full advantage, enjoy!

We are so happy to see Rick still Enjoying the Ride. It was a real pleasure to see Rick’s Silvia driven by his son Matthew at the local Morning Motors hosted by DrivingWhileAwesome:

The Silvia is in good company with Rick’s family C1 Corvette. He’s enamored with the Silvia and even found a way to get the unobtanium OEM hubcaps reproduced. For now, the Watanabe’s will be used for spirited-drives!

Huge thanks to our client Rick K for giving us the opportunity to enjoy this gorgeous (and rare) slide of JDM forbidden fruit. We look forward to seeing you on the road! More photos in the gallery below.

Chris’ Nissan 300ZX Slicktop

Filed under: Featured Cars and Projects,Maintenance,Performance,z32
by Alvin G @ 2:32 pm on July 7, 2023

Nissan’s (Z32) 300ZX is a model that we specialize in at Z Car Garage and our shop is always filled Twin-Turbo, NA or convertible variants. Chris G visited us for suspension and engine work on his “slicktop” NA 300ZX:

Chris’ Z has always been a handful in the suspension department he just wanted to make it more “adult” so we happily obliged. Full suspension upgrades included  SPL Upper control arms, SPL rear traction arms, SPL front T/C rods, Suspension Techniques front/rear sway bars, Stillen rear strut bar and KW V3 coil-overs. We also replaced the steering rack boots and rack bushings:

The NA VG30DE engine was pulled to service the valve covers, perform timing belt services and total re-seal with Nissan valve cover gaskets / BDE billet half moon seals / Gates bypass hose / fuel lines. A JWT aluminum clutch/flywheel was installed:

Dyno Tuning

We dyno tuned the Z following the engine refresh, making a healthy 201hp/180tq at the wheels:

Watch the dyno runs in the video below:

Enjoying The Ride

Chris immediately felt a difference after the upgrades and services:

“The Z is a completely different car now. The KW V3 suspension and some real tires make the car feel brand new. All the new goodies they added just took this car to the next level for me. The engine rebuild made a world of difference, pulls hard in every gear, sounds 5x better than before, no more leaks/smells. Just overall an amazing transformation I could feel as soon as I rolled out of the shop.”

The Z32 is super fresh with gold BBS LM wheels and timeless good looks. We loved working with Chris, knowing him since he was young and now he’s got a kid of his own…

“I was first introduced to Z’s when my friend bought an 85’ Z31. From there I found the Z32 and fell in love. I really wanted a slicktop, after about a year of looking I found one in the Bay Area and drove out the next day to see it and ended up buying it. I first brought my car to ZCG in 2015. I did research on shops in the bay area, and everything kept pointing back to ZCG as the best of the best. So, I scheduled time with Rob and after meeting him and seeing his true passion for the Z I knew I had found the right people to bring my car to! From beginning to end Rob helped plan everything, I had a list of wants and to-do’s and they made it happen. Along with other recommendations which really helped bring everything together. I could not have done it without them and their abundance of Z knowledge. Some roadblocks occurred during the build, but Rob kept me updated the entire time and followed through to the end to make sure everything was spot on before the next step. Their mindfulness is top tier.”

Thanks for your support Chris. We live for this. Long Live the Z!

Two for Tuesday: Anthony and Hector’s R35 GT-Rs

by Alvin G @ 9:35 am on June 27, 2023

Z Car Garage routinely services and modifies Nissan’s R35 supercar and today we have two that visited us for transmission work.

Anthony’s R35

Anthony came to ZCG after a dealership pulled a transmission failure code on his 2009 R35 GT-R. There is a common defect in the pressure sensors inside the transmission of specific model year R35s and ZCG can provide a client a little more than a dealership simply replacing a part. If we see something that is a known issue we like to offer an upgraded solution.

After getting a quote for a substantial amount at the dealership, Anthony reached out to us, brought the car in and we confirmed the failure. Jack’s Transmissions out of Colorado is a well-known R35 transmission builder and we had them build a “hot rod” unit with upgraded pressure sensors and clutches.

We removed the transmission and sent it to Jack’s. With the upgraded pressure sensors we needed to re-program the ECU and dyno tune to make sure it performed well. Anthony’s R35 made 511hp/478tq at the wheels, enjoy the dyno run video below:

Hector’s R35

Two weeks later, Hector visited us with is R35 having the exact same transmission code issue. We removed the transmission and re-installed the rebuilt unit from Jack’s. In the exhaust area we found downpipe issues… the passenger side turbo had a really terrible repair on the turbo charger housing in an attempt to get it to seal:

We removed all of that and repaired it correctly. With the exhaust off we were able to replace the outlet gaskets, all of the turbo studs and nuts plus a missing exhaust bracket. All exhaust system issues were corrected.

We also dyno tuned Hector’s R35 after the fresh transmission was installed and it made 501hp/494tq to the wheels. Enjoy the dyno video below:

Both GT-Rs are making great power and driving at full power with beautifully shifting transmissions. This is another great example of why independent specialty shops exist…we take over when the dealership says just replace it with a stock part…Long Live Boost and Long Live the R35!

Nathan’s R35 GT-R

Filed under: Featured Cars and Projects,Maintenance,Performance,R35
by Alvin G @ 9:35 am on June 23, 2023

We love working on late-model Nissans and Nathan visited Z Car Garage for tuning and bolt-ons for his 2014 Nissan R35 GT-R.

We installed our go-to Specialty-Z R35 intake kit, AMS 90mm downpipes and AMS 90mm midpipe with stock flange to the cat back exhaust:

The Specialty-Z intake kit replaces the restrictive factory airbox:

AMS downpipes and midpipe:

Dyno Tuning

Nathan signed on for ECUTEK tuning including his own ECUTEK Bluetooth dongle to check codes and monitor vitals. With Rob’s dyno tuning the GT-R made 553hp/545tq at the wheels, gains of +53hp/82tq:

Enjoy the dyno videos below:

Nathan was super excited with the results and fueling upgrades are up next. Long Live Boost and Long Live the GT-R!
