Kai’s 1972 Datsun 240Z

Many of our clients perform work on their Z cars by themselves, and we love to help when they are ready. Kai N installed a bunch of parts on his 1972 Datsun 240Z and got to the point where he didn’t feel comfortable taking it further. He took his Z to several local shops and was not getting it sorted so he visited Z Car Garage. We got him dialed in by sorting out his Weber carbs, brakes and fuel system. Our ZCG Heat Shield also graces his induction setup.

“A while back I installed triple DCOEs, headers and exhaust. I got some professional help to get the car running, but it was not quite right, so I knew my next call would be to ZCG. But before I made the call the pandemic hit, I found myself with a bit more free time and started working on other bits of the car. I ended up working on the cooling system (new radiator, electric fans), fuel system (electric fuel pump), new brakes and suspension.”

Z in the Family

Kai shares his Z history:

“The Z belonged to my Uncle Donnie until the late 90’s. He sold the car to our local mechanic. I’ve always wanted a Z and my Dad always reminded me where I could find Uncle Donnie’s old Z if I was ever ready to own one. When I was finally able to acquire my dream car in 2017, I asked the mechanic a few times if he would sell me the car while I was shopping for a Z, but he was on the fence about it. BTW I think he had 2 or 3 Zs at the time. After a few months of me bugging him, a generous offer and my uncle (along with his friends) putting in a few good words on my behalf, he was finally convinced to sell me the car.”

“I will never forget that after I purchased the Z, my Dad told me a story. Before my uncle sold the car to the mechanic; Uncle Donnie had asked my Dad if he wanted the Z. I was a few years from being old enough to drive and the Z could have been my first car. Of course, my Dad declined the offer. I got my Z, it just happened 20ish years (and a lot of $) late.”

Mechanical Sorting

Kai wanted us to address a list of items and we knocked each one out. Littles things like installing a temperature sensor, replacing motor and transmission mounts, re-wiring his fuel pump and new rack bushings were taken care of. We also sorted out his braking system and nut/bolted the entire suspension followed by a full alignment.

The engine bay was cleaned up, drive belt replaced and we sorted the Weber carbs. Kai purchased one of our Z Car Garage Heat Shields and we modified it to work with his throttle cable linkage:

More info on our ZCG Heat Shield below:

ZCG Heat Shield

We are excited to offer the Z Car Garage Heat Shield for your triple-carb’d L-series Z car. This is a one-piece 304 stainless unit with laser-etched serial number. Proven on all of our L-series engine builds and dyno testing.

This heat shield will fit Mikuni, Weber, Dellorto and Jenvey induction with several intake manifolds like the Harada:

Dyno Tuning

The triple Webers were dialed in on the dyno. With Rob’s tuning the Z went from running poorly to running well, making 141hp/141tq to the wheels:

Listen to that L-Series music on the dyno:

Kai is really happy with the work we performed:

“It’s a completely different car. It still needs work, but I can finally enjoy the car. I didn’t want a track car or a pristine show car, I simply wanted my Z to be something that I could enjoy. ZCG brought the joy. My Z’s journey isn’t done, it will continue to evolve and I’ll be counting on ZCGs help. I approached ZCG without much of a plan. I think Rob and crew formulated and executed the perfect plan for me (and my budget). The car is fun and safe, while having potential for more growth.  I had not driven the car in 2 years, So I’m sure you can imagine how happy I was.”

What’s next for Kai’s Z? He’s driven Mrs. Butters, our 1971 shop 240Z and he is returning to ZCG for our ZCG Big Brakes!

“My experience at ZCG has been amazing, I’m pumped for the next step in my car’s journey. ZCG BBK is next for me! Also being at the shop is cool too, there is always something there that blows my mind (like the BRE Z or the IMSA).”

Thanks for your support Kai, we are honored to be a part of your Z car journey!

PARTS: ZCG CV Axles for Peter’s 1977 Datsun 280Z

by Alvin G @ 5:10 pm on May 17, 2021

We love to see owners installing our Z Car Garage CV Axles on their Datsuns, especially from overseas! Peter installed a set himself on this 1977 Datsun 280Z at his home in Halmstad, Sweden.

Our Z Car Garage CV Axles help transmit power to the ground and ensure smoother operation compared to your standard half shafts. We have over 200 CV axle kits on customer cars and we are stoked with all of the positive feedback.

Peter has CV axle set #0323 and we are happy to report that he installed them himself with ease:

“The installation was very easy, the axles even came pre-greased ready to bolt in. There was even some red Loctite in the box, great! The axles look very sturdy and I’m sure they are going to last me a life time. An axle failure is the last thing I want, especially since spares are so scarce here in Sweden. Money well spent in my eyes.”

He sent us a few pictures before/after replacing his old half-shafts. Nice work!

Peter is really happy with the CV Axle performance, under all driving conditions:

“Hi Rob,

I got my car running yesterday. Must tell you that I love your axles! After installing them I’ve got zero vibrations in the drive line. Used to have some at 70mph+, especially during acceleration which I suspected coming from either the prop shaft or drive axles. I’m very happy!

Have a great weekend”
Peter

Dreaming of Zs

There are around 130 registered S30 Z cars in Sweden, they sold so few that importing is basically the only option, and most registered today are. Peter shared his Z story with us:

“I had dreamt about a S30 for a long time. Driving modern cars on track for the last few years had me longing for something more analogue. S30s are few and far between in Sweden so importing one seemed like the best option. I bought it early 2019 from a car dealer in the UK, they had imported it from Jacksonville, Florida. Here it is after picking it up at the harbour”

Driven Hard with L-Series Magic!

The car was a real survivor with almost no rust, but a very worn engine. Peter’s initial plan was to tune the stock engine, but in the end it was easier to buy a complete unit. He had Datsun Spirit build a Stage 4 engine:

“I like their philosophy with low rotating mass and how they build their engines. I had many emails back and forth with DSI discussing how to support the engine, and everything they said turned out to work great. I really believe that the engine is the heart of the car, so any other engine than a L-series was not an option to me.  Jenvey DSI ITB 50mm throttle bodies and fuel injection are controlled by an EMU Classic from ECU Master.”

Peter did the engine swap, but the final installation, wiring and tuning was done by a local reputable shop called JMB Optimering in Halmstad, Sweden. With a Kamaeri 6-3-2 header and custom 3″ exhaust they managed to extract 298hp @ 7500rpm at the rear wheels from the DSI Stage 4 3.0l.

Backing the ~300whp L-series is a 280ZX 5-speed transmission and upgraded suspension from Techno Toy Tuning. At the rear, an R200 diff with Quaife LSD an our ZCG CV Axles helps put the power down. Sparco Sprint seats keep him in place on the track.

Peter has been Enjoying The Ride on the street and track:

“All the work with the car has led to a lot of time spent in the garage, but I took one thing at the time so I have still put around 4000 miles on it since I got it. The idea is to have a summer car that can be used on the track regularly and on the back roads. This season the car will be used in a local sprint cup, consisting of five events, plus a few trackdays. I love driving on the Nurburgring, a place I frequently go to, and the plan is to take the car there as soon as the COVID situation is under control.”

Listen to it sing in this video from track and autocross days with more on his YouTube channel.

“I’m very satisfied with your products and service. I live in Sweden and any after market support is very scarce. They around 25 240Z here in 1973, that’s about it. A project is never finished and I have some more things to do, but now I plan to enjoy and track the car for the foreseeable future.”

Thanks for your support Peter! We love that you are driving your Z and enjoying our parts over in Sweden. Long Live The Z!

Our ZCG Big Brakes have been winning over Z-car enthusiasts locally and globally. Jeremy G recently purchased a set for his 1973 Datsun 240Z and performed the installation himself at his shop in San Jose, CA.

Big-Brake Kits Available For DIY Install!

Z Car Garage is proud to offer our Big-Brake Kit to Z-Car owners that want to perform the installation themselves. We can ship worldwide and each kit contains everything needed with a comprehensive (40-page) installation guide. Blog posts documenting all of our customers running the ZCG Big-Brakes can be found HERE. Enjoy these pictures of Jeremy’s beautiful S30 and his ZCG Big-Brake installation:

As mentioned, our ZCG Big-Brake kit ships with everything needed to install and retains the factory parking brake:

Jeremy successfully installed the BBK on his Z, complete with functioning parking brake:

The brakes fit behind his 15×9(F) and 15×10 (R) Longchamp XR-4 wheels:

Beyond ease of installation and quality components, our Big-Brakes perform by offering superb pedal feel…everyone that drives our demo Z confirms! This is a direct result of working with Stoptech to create a totally bolt-in solution requiring no M/C change or additional proportioning valve/adjustments. Jeremy was very happy as well with great feedback:

“Big thanks to Rob Fuller and the guys at Z Car Garage for working with Stoptech to make this awesome big brake kit for S30s. Installed yesterday and spent most of today running around and they feel great. Best feeling and balanced brakes I’ve ever had on any Z.”

Jeremy removed and sold his existing Wilwood setup, not uncommon once you experience just how good our Big-Brakes are!

A 3.5L Driver

The best part is that you can see Jeremy frequently Enjoying The Ride all over the Bay Area. This Z gets driven! Under the hood is a Rebello 3.5L soon to be fed by 50mm Mikuni carbs tuned by Kyushahousetaka. We dyno tuned the Z last year with 44s and this G-nosed beauty baselined at 238hp/229tq. With Rob’s tuning the Z produced 288hp/257tq to the wheels! We are really excited to unlock more power with a few upgrades, now that Jeremy has brakes up to the task!

You can see even more pictures of the Z on Speedhunters HERE. Looking forward to more tuning sessions and thanks for your support Jeremy!

LONG LIVE THE Z!

We love to see owners installing our Z Car Garage CV Axles on their Datsuns. Chris M recently performed the installation himself on his 1970 240Z. You may have seen this Safari Gold Series 1 beauty at events in the Atlanta area or online features. We are proud to be part of it!

Our Z Car Garage CV Axles help transmit power to the ground and ensure smoother operation compared to your standard half shafts. We have over 130 CV axle kits on customer cars and we are stoked with all of the positive feedback.

Chris has CV axle set #0353 and we are happy to report that he installed them himself with ease:

“Install was a breeze, old axles come out, these new ones go right in in their place. Couldn’t ask for an easier installation.”

He sent us a few pictures of the unboxing and before/after replacing his old half-shafts. Nice work Chris!

Simple and Satisfying

Chris’ Z is not a fully-restored example. Aside from the paint he’s gone through the entire car making it an ultra-clean driver that is still show-worthy. The stance is achieved through full air-suspension. It was one of the first S30s to be on airbags, gracefully tucking those gorgeous 15×9 Work Equip 01s:

The engine remains an L-series with triple-Weber 45DCOE’s and 10:25:1 CR ported E31 head on a stock 280Z bottom end. We do love his choice of Fujitsubo Legalis exhaust.

Listen to it sing:

Chris’ Z and the great story behind it has been told many times we encourage you to read his Petrolicious and Speedhunters features.

Datsun/Enthusiast

Chris loves his Nissan/Datsuns but also enjoys other marques as an enthusiast. Check out his R32 Skyline GT-R, 280Z (bought by his uncle brand new in 1978, and has been in the family since) and R30 Skyline 4-door!

We’ve been following Chris on Instagram for years and met him at SEMA and when he visited Rob at our shop. Stoked to see a fellow Georgian and be a part of his Z car journey. Thank you Chris for your support and we are happy to see you Enjoying The Ride (and CV axles)! Enjoy the photo gallery below
