Have You Seen the GREEN Z?

If you were wondering where the 350z you have seen dominating the Autox, lapping Thunderhill, Laguna Seca (twice), and which received a MotorDyne single exhaust has gone….. it has a new paint job! The ZCarGarage 350z is now GO GREEN with a few strategically-placed black accents and ZCG logos. And yes, it is still tearing up road courses and auto-crosses with driver Scott Smith behind the wheel. Big THANKS to William Wei of Williams Auto Body  for painting the Z a familiar shade of green to complement Rob Fuller’s Go Green Datsun and 510 and 240z cars 🙂

Here are some pictures of the Z in action where he claimed TTIG, go Scott! (pics courtesy of LMSCC)

A few words on Scott’s setup. He runs the Z in the OSP class (versus CSP) because the most of the interior panels of the car are gutted to make-up for the added weight of the current Kirk 4-pt roll bar, though the Z is getting a full cage later. It runs on 285/30 Kumho V710 tires at all four corners that are mounted on lightweight, 18″ SSR Competition wheels( or Enkei RPF1). Z Car Garage recently tuned the Z with the Osiris/Uprev software to an amazing and lively 271rwhp / 252rwtq with its current bolt-ons. The autocross transitions are dampened by a set of Koni-based TrueChoice dual-adjustable coilovers and the alignment specs are dialed-in by SPL suspension components.

It’s About Time!!!! More Stoptechs

This beautiful ’06 350z belongs to a good friend of the shop and he has been taking it to the track for a couple years now.  The time finally came last week to make the brake upgrade that it desperately needed as this car had the base brakes and not even the optional Brembos.

Fred has installed about a hundred-thousand of these (rough estimate, ha) and it flew right on the car with no hassles.   I have included a few of the before photos to see how the kit compares to stock.   We stuck with one of their new street pads for now because of the expected rain on the track day and the Volk CE28s are still shod with street tires.

Besides the newly added StopTechs, this car sports a Jim Wolf POP charger on the intake side and a NISMO system on the exhaust side.  The Volk CE28s have also been color matched to the car for the perfect look.  Now all we need to do is get Alvin to put some slicks on this mother and give some of our other friends the beat down at the track!!

I’ll have some more info on this car when we get to the actual track day post at the end of the week!  View all of the photos from the install after the read more.

350z Track Video: Thunderhill 6.19.09

Our friend Scott was nice enough to get some footage for the latest installment of our summer track event posts while he was at Thunderhill Raceway last Friday.  Please find a reputable track event organizer, like Hooked On Driving, and get your car out on the track to have some fun!

This video shows what a well set up Z can do in the right hands, and I especially love all the little comments he added about all the cars he passes, wicked.  Also, if this car sounds different to you than in previous posts then give yourself a high-five.  It received a new Motordyne “Shockwave” single exhaust.  I will have photos, dyno numbers, and more info on the new exhaust this week.  Enjoy!

Video: ZCG 370z At Thunderhill Raceway

Here is a video of the first red group (most experienced) session in our ZCG 370z last Saturday at Thunderhill.  This isn’t me driving but you will see my helmet bounce in and out of the screen a few times from the passenger seat.  There isn’t anything too exciting here as it’s the first session but I thought some of you might like to see it

Also remember that we are in a stock 370z on stock tires here.  Almost all of these cars are on “R” compound tires and some are making huge horsepower, ex: both Dodge Vipers.  We’ll be able to keep up with them soon!

Hopefully next time we get the ZCG 370z out on track we will be a bit more successful with completing the entire day.  Enjoy and be safe.

Note: If any of our loyal readers have footage of their Zs on track at Laguna Seca on Monday please let me know.  Alvin and Scott this means you two.

Z Car Garage Tests 240z Big Brake Kit

Filed under: 240z,Featured Cars and Projects,Performance
by Forbes @ 11:18 am on September 30, 2008

The first track test of Z Car Garage’s own big brake kit took place last week at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA. The brake kit was designed entirely in house and has gone through various stages of testing over the past few months since its creation. This initial kit was installed on a freshly restored 240z to ensure that the car would be able to handle it’s new braking capabilities.

After the owner of the car had a few sessions under his belt with the kit it was time to test the brakes under tougher race-like conditions. To do this the ZCG crew enlisted the help of professional racecar driver David Ray. David has won a San Francisco Regional championship (1994) in an ITS prepared 240z and again (2004) in a T2 class 350z.

With the Z Car team in the hot pits, Ray took to the track with instructions to make two hot laps to gauge initial feel and then return to the pits for inspection. He returned to the pits with a smile and a satisfactory report. The ZCG pit crew took temperature measurements and did a quick visiual inspection before sending Ray back onto the track. This time he was asked to stay out for the entire session or until he felt any change in the braking feel.  He stayed out for the rest of the half hour session with no issues.  Every other lap or so he would give a thumbs up to the crew as he went down the front straight.

When the session ended he pulled into the pits and the crew took their final “hot lap” readings. After all the data was logged Ray jumped out of the 240z with a huge grin on his face.  The first words out of his mouth were, “These are the best brakes I have ever felt on a 240z, including my race cars.”  He continued on, “These brakes are much better than the Brembos on my championship winning T2 350z, I even had to pump them (the Brembos) after a few hot laps.”

Now on to the specs. The rotors are 12.9 inches in diameter with custom machined billet brackets. The rotor hats were also designed from scratch in house at Z Car Garage. Other parts included with the ZCG brake kit are an upgraded master cylinder, brake booster, and braided lines. The caliper specs are under lock and key for now but rest assured that the braking bias is spot on with amazing pedal feel.

Due to the size of the rotor and caliper, wheel choice is very critical. Z Car Garage has worked extensively to get the brakes to fit under the current 16″ Panasport casting with a custom Z Car Garage offset.

More updates will be posted here as they happen.  ENJOY!!
