MSA 2009: Z Car West Coast Nationals 4.26.09

by Forbes @ 3:52 pm on April 21, 2009

That’s right friends, it’s time for the annual Motorsport Auto Show.   This is the largest gathering of Zs from all years on the west (best) coast and possibly the country!!

Z Car Garage and ZCarBlog.com will be making the trek to the mecca of Z shows this weekend down in Orange, CA.  This show gladly accepts all year Z Cars and has a trophy category for almost every variation of Z, stock and modified.  We will be taking the ZCG 370z on it’s maiden road trip along with one other Z Car Garage show car that is TBA at this point.  I just don’t want to commit to any certain car in writing until I know for a fact what we will be taking.

This show really is one of the standout events of the year and promises to set the bar again in 2009.  I will be posting photos of ANYTHING of interest so make sure to check back in by early next week to see all the Nissan/Datsun madness.

Rob, Meghan, and myself will be representing ZCG so if you see us make sure to say hi.  Yes, I know that this post is a bit ‘last minute’ but I wasn’t sure we were even going until yesterday, I’ll be posting any future events as soon as I am aware so that all of the Z Car Garage faithful have plenty of time to plan.

For now here are a few pictures that I have borrowed from the MSA website to share with you the quality of cars that attend this show.  ENJOY!

Blog Update 4.14.09

by Forbes @ 10:55 pm on April 14, 2009

I have updated the for sale page which now shows that our amazing Datsun 1200 has found a good new home.  I believe that one of the other cars has also been sold, I will verify this by tomorrow and update everything.

If you would like to post a car or other Z related parts please contact Rob Fuller through email: rob@zcargarage.com

In other news we are coming really close to finishing the Red 280zx 2+2 restoration.  There are a few big shows coming up and the plan is to show the car as much as we can until it is delivered to the owners.  Rob and Fred have really put in some long hours to make sure that the final build is as close to perfection as possible.  Now it’s time to show some results!!

The Behemoth RB28 build is still progressing at William’s Autobody and the engine is still waiting on a few final parts from Japan before it gets sealed up before assembly.  We can’t wait to get going and I’m sure the owner is just as anxious.

There are also a couple of other engine jobs that should be done in the next couple of weeks so look for a few pictures and some dyno results on those projects.  There are a couple of Z32TT 300zx cars as well as a freshly built L28 that will be going into a 240z that has been some time in the making.

On the 370z front we will be installing the new Eibach springs in our shop 370z in the next few days.  I will have photos and a driving report when this takes place.  I will also post an update on the modifications and repairs after our “track day issues” that took place last weekend at Thunderhill Raceway with Speed Ventures.

That’s all for this Tuesday/Thurday update.  Please forward us any suggestions so that ZCarBlog.com can be the best it can.  Thanks

Long Live the Z

P.s.  Don’t forget to have your taxes post-marked by tomorrow!!  (if you live in the U.S.)

370z: Thunderhill Track Event 4.11.09

by Forbes @ 10:33 pm on April 13, 2009

Zs are at home on the race track.  The Z was thrust into the public eye back in the early 70’s when they were winning every event that they could be entered in.  So when Z Car Garage picked up a 370z a couple of weeks one of our first goals was to get the stock car out on the track to see what it could do.

We were at the track fully loaded with a greasy breakfast by 6:30 and by 7:30 we had finished registration and tech and were awaiting the driver’s meeting.  The meeting began close to 8am and our large group went through all of the usual track event propaganda.  The Speed Ventures crew was super down to earth and very upfront about what they expected from all of us and the thorough meeting took place without a hitch.

We registered the car in the Red (fastest and most experienced) and White (most novice) to ensure that we would get as much time on the track as possible.  The red group came up right after the driver’s meeting so we geared up and got on track with me riding shotgun.  After everything was warmed up we got to the task of seeing how far we could push the car in it’s stock form.

We figured the tires would be the limiting factor for the car today but we were out to test the limits of every part of the car, and boy did we ever.  We finished the session and pulled the car into the pits to record our test data and then let the car cool down for one session.  Then I got behind the wheel to go out for my first session.  Which leads me to what you are all waiting to hear.  The car had issues.  Two and a half laps after I went out I was back in the pits with a frown on my face.

I’m not going to go into what happened until we have a solution to offer all of you.  After we determined that the issue wasn’t detrimental to the car or our safety we went back out in the next few sessions, and then we ran into our second problem.  This time on our standard post-session inspection we discovered that the front right brake pad had begun to degrade and was grooving the rotor, check out the pictures.  At this point we decided to call it a day because we had to drive the car two-and-a-half hours back to San Jose.

On further inspection today our suspicions were confirmed, it looks like we’ll be calling Nissan to have it replaced…. under warranty.  All the other brakes looked fine and were functioning normally and in fact I didn’t notice any change in performance in the brake system in the session before the failure.  Strange.  Looking back we could have risked it and stayed for a few more sessions to see if the situation would change but because of the first issue we headed back to the bay area.

Even though the car wasn’t perfect, I had a blast testing the car and would encourage all of you to get out on the track and have some fun.  Everyone that I spoke to at the event was amazing.  Car people are the best and always seem to go out of their way to take car of fellow enthusiasts, thanks to all who attended the event.  We will see you soon, and we’ll be bringing the 370z.

ZCG is committed to making the 370z an efficient track tool and will go to any lengths necessary to solve any issues that come up.  As soon as any progress is made it will be released here on ZCarBlog.com first so make sure you keep coming back to get your fix.

There are over a hundred photos after the ‘read more’ so make sure you check them out. One of the cars that I was most interested in was a Mazda FD RX-7.  This car is simply amazing.  Nothing on the car was left untouched.  Check out the photos and I’ll try to get some more info from the owner.  Wow.  I tried to take photos of as many cars as I could so I hope that yours made it.  See you out there.

Happy Fifth Birthday: Z Car Garage!!!!

by Forbes @ 9:03 pm on April 7, 2009

Today, April 7th, is Z Car Garage’s fifth birthday.  We couldn’t be happier with where we are at right now and we have so many people to thank for it.  The ones who have given the most know who they are and we were lucky enough to have a few of them come down to the shop today.  Our customers and friends are some of the kindest and most giving people on the face of the planet and we wouldn’t have our current success without them and you.  From ZCG to you,  THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll try to find some old photos of when the shop first opened and I’ll share them with all of you in the next few days.  There are some pretty funny ones.

On a side note, Rob and Fred are pulling late night shifts at the shop right now to finalize the longest build in ZCG history, the red 1982 280zx 2+2 non-turbo restoration.  After years of sourcing impossible to find parts and dealing with strange circumstances this car will be completed in a day or two from now.  This car is unbelievable.  It’ll put any car rolling off of an assembly line to shame.  We rule, happy birthday to us.

Thanks again to all of you,

Z Car Garage
