This 1966 Ford Mustang fastback was built as a B Production race car in 1991 by Historic Race Engineering of Costa Mesa, California and has competed in VARA, SVRA, VDCA, and HSR events since. Described by the seller as a period-correct homage to the Shelby GT350R, this example features Shelby-style bodywork along with an upgraded suspension and brakes, larger wheels and tires, and safety equipment. Its small-block Ford V8 is backed by a Toploader four-speed manual transmission purchased from Cobra Automotive. The car was reportedly built to FIA specifications and is currently configured for SVRA Group 6, VDCA Group 6, and HSR Group 3 competition. This GT350R replica is now offered on behalf of the current owner with service records, a letter from Carroll Shelby, a logbook, timing sheets, old racing photos, spare parts, a car cover, and a clean GA title.
The steel body was reportedly acid-dipped and seam-welded before being fitted with a fiberglass Shelby hood and a GT350R-model front valance during the build in the early 1990s. An authentic Shelby GT350R is said to have been on hand for reference at the Historic Race Engineering facility during the build of this car and three similar examples. Bodywork is finished in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes as a tribute to the GT350R. The side and rear windows are plexiglass, and Shelby-style window frames have been fitted to both doors. The exterior lights (covered in tape at this time) and the windshield wipers are functional.
The rear fenders were clearance cut and modified to resemble those of the GT350R and to accommodate 15″ American Racing Torq Thrust wheels and Goodyear Blue Streak tires. The lowered stance comes courtesy of 650-lb front coil springs on modified control arms and rear leaf springs with a Watt’s linkage setup. Koni shocks are fitted, and braking is managed by front discs and rear drums.
The quick-release steering wheel fronts instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline. The gauge cluster and dashboard are configured to resemble the GT350R’s, with smaller Stewart Warner gauges displaying fuel pressure, oil temperature, oil pressure, and water temperature. There are two steering wheels are included: a black leather-rimmed unit and a Shelby-style wooden component.
Additional safety equipment includes an ATL fuel cell and a Halon fire-suppression system that has been plumbed to the interior, engine, and fuel tank. The car carries a logbook and has competed in VARA, VDCA, and HSR events since 1991.
The 302ci small-block Ford V8 was built in 2015 by Ted Wenz of Savannah Race Engineering in Georgia, and an invoice for the work is included in the photo gallery below. The engine was installed by Andy Greene Sports and Vintage Race Cars of Savannah, Georgia
The engine was dyno tested prior to installation, and a video of the test is below. The SuperFlow WinDyn dyno results indicate 456 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 384 lb-ft of torque at 5,600 rpm
Carroll Shelby is reported to have personally driven this Mustang in January 1991 and provided his feedback to the builder, as stated in the signed letter above. An authentic GT350R was reportedly used for reference throughout the build.
The car has a title and is registered in GA and licensed to drive on the street. Runs on race fuel.
