ZCG 240z Big Brake Kits are HERE!!

That’s right friends!  The long awaited ZCG 240z Big Brake Kits have started rolling in from our manufacturer.  This kit has been over a year in the making and it is amazing to see them finally come into the shop as a finished product, we are extremely proud.

From the pictures below you can see that the black caliper kits were the first to arrive, we are expecting the rest of the black and red kits to be in house within the next couple of weeks.  What this means though is that we can finally get a couple of the RB project cars off of the dolleys and onto the ground with some sort of real suspension beneath them, exciting right?!?

The nice thing about the kits themselves, besides being the best brakes ever offered for a 240z, is that everything needed to for the complete kit comes in two boxes!  Even we don’t have to go searching for special parts, we designed it to be a one shot deal.

As soon as the kit start making their way onto customer’s cars I will have more photos as well as the reactions of the new owners, so stay tuned for that.  In the meantime if you need to catch up on the past brake kit posts just click HERE.

Super Clean, Near Original, 240z at ZCG

Cars of this caliber do not come up for sale very often.  This 1973 240z is a two-owner, original-paint beauty that was just purchased by a close friend of Z Car Garage to replace another Z he has owned for 15 years.  The new 240z has just over 87,000 original miles and it shows.  There is no rust anywhere on the shell and the interior parts that see the most use are still in great condition.

All of the original manuals and even the window sticker were included in the deal.  Make sure to see the pictures of the options sheet and the extremely cool Datsun “Dial Your Mileage” tool.  Other options include factory air conditioning, a center arm rest, and floor mats that cost a whopping $9.50.  Hahaha, those would be a $200 option today.  The total original price comes in at $5,299 which is steep for its day until you realize the performance that it delivered.

Under the hood you will find the original L24 engine with a pair of aftermarket downdraft Weber carburetors.  I got a chance to drive it today and it cruises along like a dream.  It really drives absolutely beautifully.  The stock 14 inch wheels obviously leave room for improvement in the handling department but you can’t beat them in the looks.  This car is the real deal.

After my short test drive Rob and I decided that we should put the car on the dyno to see what power it is putting out.  All I can say is that this thing needs to ditch these carbs.  It runs out of breath as soon as you roll into the throttle.  There are already plans in the works to give it some more “Umph” using period correct modifications.  There will be more updates on this car and hopefully it will stay in the Z Car Garage family for a long, long time.

There are more pictures after the “read more.”  Enjoy this new addition to the family!

ZCG 370z: Back From The Strip

I want to start this post by saying that I don’t drag race very often and we only got in four runs.

I left the shop around 2:15pm on my solo tip to Sonoma.  I was hoping to get a better turn out of our customers and friends for the afternoon trip up to Infineon Raceway yesterday but hopefully there will be a better turn out next time.  The drive was overcast with a few sprinkles here and there but no serious rain on the horizon.

The hour and a half drive was fairly uneventful and I even pulled out the camera to take a picture as the 370 and I passed by the San Quintin State Prison on highway 580.  I pulled into the gate at Infineon around 3:45, paid my $25 racing fee (thanks to Rob for spotting me), and proceeded to wait in line for tech inspection.

The track staff, seeing that the car was brand new, waved me through without a fuss and I went directly into the “Street Performance” group’s staging lanes.  Apparently I have perfect timing because there was barely time to turn off the car and say hello to a few people before we were headed up to make our first runs.

I happened to be parked next to a ’71 2.4L turbo Datsun 510 for my first run so I was pretty excited (I own a turbo’d 510 myself, again thanks to Rob.)   I get to the water box to do my burnout and a second or two after the tires start spinning the car begins to wheel-hop pretty badly.  I cut the burnout short and roll to the lights.

Now here comes the part where you realize how little I drag race.  I’m saying out loud to myself, “Leave on the third yellow.”  I thought I did.  NOPE.  I launched the car at 5,000 rpm and I cut a .539 light.  Bummer.  The tires are cold from the crappy burnout and I leave the tree with the wheels spinning which again turns into wheel hop.  The tires spin pretty well on the shift into second again and I am on my way to turning a 14.672 @ 100.83mph.  At least this leaves plenty of room for improvement, right?

Well… our next runs would have to wait a bit because it did start to rain a bit for a total hold time of around 45min.  Now back to racing.

Over the next two runs I alter my burnout and launching techniques to get down to a 14.077 @ 101.28mph.  Now it’s time for eliminations.  At this point I am way more confident in launching the car and in my staging strategies so I dial in a 13.95 for the first round.  Now the problem is that I ended up lining up next to one of our good customers in his supercharged 350z.  This is bad for two reasons.  First, he has been drag racing for a long, long time.  Second, since we are racing each other, one of us is going to lose in the first round.

After a decent burnout, finally, we stage up and put the hammer down.  I cut a .158 light which isn’t too bad and I run through the top end with a 13.930 @ 100.45mph.  I ran faster than my dial-in time.

If you are new to bracket racing here is a very short tutorial.  You initially set a dial-in time of the fastest you think your car will run, mine was a 13.95.  The goal then is to get as close to that number as possible without going faster.  Sort-of like Price Is Right rules. If both racers go faster, or “break out”, then the person who goes over by the least wins.

So I broke out by .020 of a second which means that Walt had to go quite a bit quicker than his 12.95 dial in time to give me the victory.  He didn’t, but boy was is close!!  He ended up running a 12.933 at 104.28mph.  That means he was .003 closer to his dial in time than I was.  You really couldn’t ask for a better race.

I know that we will be going back to the Wednesday Night Drags as soon as we get a chance, and maybe someone with higher skills than yours truly will be doing the driving to make sure that we get the most out of the 370z, it should be good for low 13’s.  All I want is another piece of Walt and that supercharged 350z.

Enjoy the pictures below and click the read more for the full gallery.  Unfotunately none of the videos I took of the Zs turned out well but I will try to scan the time slips so that everyone can have a chuckle at my expense.

Busy Weekend for ZCG

So last night was the Hot Import Nights show in San Mateo, what a crazy event!   The HIN personnel always run a top notch event and everyone at the shop holds their crew in the highest regard.  The drifting was awesome, the cars were amazing, and the girls were…. well…. hot.  Grade A good times.  I took a few hundred pictures of the best the show had to offer and I should have them edited and up on the blog in the next few days.  I also was in touch with our friends over at PhotoShootMyCar.com and I should be getting some high quality footage from them as well in the near future.

Today (Sunday) we are heading down to Laguna Seca to observe the vintage 2.5 Trans-Am race.  We all love seeing Datsun 510s beat the crap out of old Alfas so it should be a good time, plus the weather looks like its going to be beautiful.  If you are in the area or plan on attending today stop by and say hello to your friendly ZCG crew.

On Friday we tested a new exhaust system and a few other familiar modifications to a 2008 350z with the VQ35HR engine and I will have pictures, dyno graphs, and a full report on the modifications up as soon as I get a chance.

Finally,  we have been getting a few parts from all over the world for the ZCG GT-R.  They are now starting to pile up and we want to get them onto the car ASAP.  Included are a new set of VOLK Racing track wheels (in 19″ so that we can finally get a decent track tire), an Aero Motions electronically adjustable rear wing, carbon fiber trunk, and the COBB Tuning sway bars that have been at the shop for what feels like months.

Sorry for the lack of pictures this morning but I am sorta in a hurry to prepare for heading to Laguna Seca.  Now please let me enjoy my weekend!!  ZCG
